The years 2017 and 2018 gave us not only scientific discoveries, but also curious and exciting medical stories and cases that doctors have not dealt with for a long time.

Incredible discoveries that changed medicine

A distant future without cancer and HIV is gradually approaching. Scientists are constantly working in this direction. An oncology test in 10 minutes, radiation therapy in seconds, Alzheimer's disease, which can be "nipped" in the bud, a paralyzed person who can be raised to his feet - without exaggeration, revolutionary achievements.

Irradiation of cancer cells in seconds

Yes, Stanford scientists have created a new method of radiation therapy that destroys cancer cells in seconds. Currently, cancer patients have to be irradiated for several minutes, which is very damaging to healthy cells.

Prevention of Alzheimer's disease

A cure for Alzheimer's disease has not yet been invented, but Dusseldorf University professor Dieter Willbold has taken an important step to prevent it. He discovered that the accumulation of beta-amyloid "stacks" in brain tissue leads to this disease. Scientists have created a protein that is able to destabilize the "stacks" before they start to harm other cells

Cancer test in 10 minutes

A group of researchers from Australia has developed a rapid test for cancer. Cancer can be detected in 10 minutes, but the test does not show exactly where the cancer cells have spread. The accuracy of the test is 90%.

A filling that "builds" a tooth

Scientists from the University of Nottingham and Harvard have created a unique filling that can restore the tooth structure. It activates the growth of mineralized tooth tissue - dentin.

A paralyzed man who started walking

A 30-year-old paralyzed man who was predicted to be paralyzed for life started walking. Scientists gave him an electric stimulator, thanks to which he regained control over his muscles. The same injection was performed on three more men

HIV vaccine

An experimental vaccine that can instill immunity to 30% of known strains of HIV was developed by virologists from the United States.

GMO children

A scientist from Shenzhen was able to edit the genes of newborn twin girls using a technology that allows certain parts of the genome to be rewritten. Editing took place during artificial insemination.

Incredible stories of medicine

Recent years have also presented us with a selection of incredible cases from medical practice, which are not only fascinating, but seem impossible.

Swallowing knives and nails

One such case is numerous knives, nails and coins in the stomach. This happened in France, when doctors operated on a 52-year-old man four times to remove metal objects from his stomach. In one case, surgeons had to remove more than a hundred metal objects - nails, knives, paper clips and coins - that a man had swallowed due to mental illness.

Sweating blood

The young Italian woman had blood on her face and hands without any injuries. She was diagnosed with a rare disease — hematidrosis. The causes of sweating blood are not known for certain.

A stone in the bladder with an ostrich egg

A man in California had a bladder stone the size of an ostrich egg, weighing 770 grams.

Restored scalp

A woman got rid of her scalp because her hair got under the rotating mechanism. The skin was torn from  to the neck. Her scalp was immediately placed in an ice pack, allowing surgeons to reconstruct it. A year after the operation, hair appeared on the woman's head, she can open and close her eyes again.

Death by tattoo

In Florida, a man who was hospitalized unconscious had "Do Not Resuscitate" tattooed on his chest. Doctors had ethical disagreements on this matter. It turned out that the man really had a statement about refusing resuscitation. He died without receiving help - all according to his wishes.

We are waiting for new discoveries and inventions from scientists, which will improve the state of modern medicine in the world and give hope for a life without many serious diseases. And of course, practical medicine will never do without curiosities and unusual manifestations of diseases, which we will continue to monitor.
